Hi Tezza I just re-read your command about the "proposed" Pest Management strategy plan. - does the government going to change anything for ferret?

Hi Gilbert, sorry for making you wait. Trapping a ferret from the wild and keeping it as a pet is illegal. Ferrets are classified as Unwanted Organisms (see: https://mpi.govt.nz/.../long.../handling...organisms/). Under section 52 of the Biosecurity Act, Unwanted Organisms cannot be communicated. This means moving them around, so capturing a ferret from the wild and moving it to a house or cage would count as communication. The UO status meant that existing pet ferrets could be kept, as long as they weren’t bred or released. It is possible to apply to us to get permission to keep/move unwanted organisms. However, applications are assessed on the biosecurity risk and usually only granted if there is some sort of biosecurity benefit, i.e. for research or education purposes. If you see anything you can always let us know here, or give us a call on 0800 80 99 66. Thanks
