What size should a ferrets hutch/home be? How many times a day should you feed your ferret? And what about safe toys etc for them to play with while your away?

This ALL depends on how you, the owner, respond to their "play time".
If you intend keeping your ferrets caged for long durations then a HUGE home and play environment is a total MUST! If you are like me and give them two big and long plays around the house a day then you could get away with a smaller cage. What distresses me are those small little ferret cages on YouTube and especially the ones with those wire mesh floors - I would LOVE to stick a human into one of those so that they can walk around barefoot on wire mesh! Makes me angry when I see shit like that! Will post a video soon of my "apartment" setup - all hand-made (by me), cost about $700 per "tower-block". If you got ferrets then cost is of no concern and they can have a bedroom of their own. The term "cage" is too harsh of an environment for a beloved ferret unless they get plenty of attention outside of it. Yes... size DOES matter... the size is dependant on the attention you give them "outside" of their captive environments (cage). It is a misconception that ferrets sleep double-digits a day - it's what humans want them to do and what they want to believe - they sleep that much because they are confined to small places and can't do much else ![]() They can become depressed and develop early health issues. If you are going to keep an animal as a "pet" then you need to also be aware of THEIR requirements and what THEY want! Don't bullshit yourself into believing what YOU think is best - they know much better than you. Sorry, maybe this reply is a little harsh - I have reason.... I opened my heart and home to a little girl who spent her whole life is a cage the size of a shoebox and was fed alcohol by the owners because it made the little girl "look funny" during teenage drunken parties - her poo looked like cream cheese (fed nothing but raw cow milk - remember, ferrets are lactose intolerant), she had a dazed look in her eyes that asked "please end my life". I brought her home and let her loose in the house - she ran around in tight circles not knowing what was beyond the boundaries of the length of her body... I cried for weeks and couldn't understand why those humans did what they did ![]() She eventually discovered that there was life outside of her "cage" after she had lived in it for 80% of her life ![]() She gave me more love than ANY other human could give. I am happy that I could give her the moments in life that she never knew existed and angry over those who treated her with uncaring disrespect. Give them what they want... a proper house to live in, a proper diet and love and respect for their needs and existence in a captive environment.
