Hi gilby
Yes definately a cat issue there. Back in the days when I hunted rabbits etc certain areas were infested with cats. I knew back then they were turning into an issue. Our own cat has killed 2 wax eyes in 3 days !!
Have you tried your luck with fighting this legislation??
I would like to invite all people who are reading this post to join this site and add your opinions and comments. We are all like minded people who have enjoyed the company of ferrets and would love for the rules to be changed so we can enjoy there company once more.

Another great article Gilby and that picture speaks volumes!.
I go out at least once a week shooting possums and rabbits and every week without fail I come across a couple of cats feral/domesticated who knows and can't even imagine how much native wildlife these cats kill throughout the week?.
Maybe cat owners should replace their lost and deceased cats with ferrets and experience the love and fun that ferrets have to offer, you can also learn them tricks but best of all you can sleep soundly at night without having that guilty conscience knowing their tucked up safely at night and not out killing our beautiful native wildlife!!.

Good call Tezza.
I was in a big pet shop the other day and they would of had 20-30 rats 5 cats and plenty of mice. Talk about rubbing our nose in it. I asked if the rats were a good seller and apparently they often struggle to keep up with demand!!!
The legislation again is based on numbers. If rats were fairly rare to be kept as pets then they would of already banned it!!
I actually spoke to a member of doc a while back and all he spoke about were stoats. Ferrets didn't even get a mention?!.

Yes mate it’s ironic the doc allow so many cats and rats to be kept as pets especially knowing that all rodents are prolific breeders, fantastic climbers and will literally eat anything they come across and their more than happy to survive out in the wild, I wonder just how may pet rats escape on a weekly basis compared to ferrets? if you take a look at (lost and found) on trademe you will see that it’s full of missing cats and updated on a hourly basis so it just goes to show how irresponsible most cat owners are and their supervision skills are none existent. I would also safely say that when these missing cats fail to return home their owner’s just go straight out and replace it with another one that’s why NZ is flooded with cats and will continue to be until these new proposed regulations are implemented.

Yes but they will never ban cats from being pets!! This is where my arguement is. Ferrets were banned because of supposedly being a threat to native animals. Even thou the domesticated ferret is supervised and kept under control at all times. Cats are also a threat to native animals and are never supervised. Even the domesticated moggy poses a huge threat to birds but they will never be banned!!! This is double standards. And like I have mentioned before its all about the numbers. The number of domesticated cats in nz is huge this is why they won't bann them!!. I get frustrated thinking about it.

It's all politics
Politician calling cat band = political suicide
Politician calling cat owner to paying for registration only worth to risk if we have more greenly than cat lover.
Personally I like cat to be micro chipped and registered, owner responsible to keep cat just like dog under control at all time. My garden is not your cat's play ground/toilet.
Dam it, I missed the ferret smell off my sock drawer.

Hi gilby
How often do you pull the weeds out of the garden and get a handful of cat shit on your hands!!! It happens to me often. I agree with your views on cat rego etc but I think it needs to be taken a step further and cats need to be locked up at night. Again the system will still be wrong as ferrets should have the same treatment. This war is only beginning!!

Totally agree. I think cat should not allow cat free roaming at all time just like dog.
